On March 2nd Houston Zoo primate staff were thrilled to discover that orangutan Kelly had given birth overnight. The female infant is the third orangutan born at the zoo and is the sister of 7 year old Solaris and daughter of Doc. Unfortunately Kelly abandoned her baby within the first 24 hours and the primate staff was forced to intervene.

Fortunately the baby is doing well and the Houston Zoo is optimistic that the one month old ape can be reunited with mom or introduced to a surrogate who will raise the baby as its own.
Infant orangutans cling to their mothers all the time their first few months of life. In order to simulate this for the infant, caregivers carry the baby for 24 hours a day.
